Meet Our Doctors

Dr. Stuart Podell

Dr. Stuart Podell has served the vision care needs of the Long Island community since 1972. He has cared for four generations of families. Besides his practice in Commack, he served as Chief of Optometric Services at SUNY College of Optometry, Associate Clinical Professor of Optometry at SUNY and is presently Associate Professor Emeritus at SUNY. During his tenure at SUNY he was responsible for the clinical training of a whole generation of vision care professionals. Dr. Podell has lectured to internationally as well as to national profession organizations including the American Academy of Optometry. He is a recognized speaker of the highest order. Dr. Podell is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO), a recognition of his expertise in vision care. He was also recognized as an Ezell Fellow by the American Optometric Foundation distinguishing “the finest minds in Optometry”. Dr. Podell’s first priority has always and continues to be the vision care needs of his devoted patients. He continues to render the highest quality personal care utilizing the most modern high tech and sophisticated technology. The best description of his patient interactions is “caring care”. Dr. Podell has devoted his professional career to caring for the visual needs of his patients. He welcomes the opportunity to care for yours as well.

Dr. Sonia Valle

Dr. Sonia Valle is a 1996 graduate of State University of New York, College of Optometry, where she graduated summa cum laude. Dr. Valle knew her passion for optometry early in life and enrolled in Adelphi University’s pre-optometry undergraduate/graduate combined program with SUNY College of Optometry.

Upon completing her education, she did a residency program at the Veterans Affairs Hospital at Northport, New York. She specialized in an intensive program in Binocular Vision, Vision Therapy, Head Trauma and Stroke Related Neuro Optometric Rehabilitation, Low Vision Rehabilitation, and Primary Care Optometry.

She continues to serve the veteran population by working at the Northport VA Eye clinic since 1997. She also supervises students and residents that rotate through the program at Northport.

Dr. Valle joined the practice of Drs. Krieger and Podell in 1997. She brought her passion for optometry and expanded the vision therapy portion of the practice. She has given assistance to thousands of patients in vision therapy.

In addition to vision therapy, Dr. Valle also has significant experience in glaucoma, macular degeneration, Lasik and cataract post-op care, and ocular surface disease.

Dr. Valle has spoken at school and PTA groups on identifying learning related visual problems. She is dedicated to advancing the cause of undiagnosed visual problems affecting children’s academic potential. She is a membrane of the local, state and national optometric association. She is a member of the College of Optometrist in vision Development (COVD) and Beta Sigma Kappa.

Dr. Valle speaks Italian fluently and has acceptable knowledge of Spanish. She spends her free time with her family.

Dr. Alison Schmidt

Dr. Alison Schmidt is a licensed optometrist who provides comprehensive eye care. She is certified in the treatment and/or management of ocular disease, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, red eyes, diabetic retinopathy etc. Dr. Schmidt is experienced in fitting patients for glasses and contact lenses including toric and multifocal lenses. She is competent in seeing pediatric patients 5 and up, and is proficient in binocular/vision therapy evaluations.

Dr. Schmidt is a compassionate physician who strives to provide the best quality of care to all of her patients. She completed her undergraduate education at SUNY College at Geneseo where she graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Biology. She went on to SUNY College of Optometry where she graduated with honors. While in school, Dr. Schmidt was an active member of Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity where she was able to participate in a mission trip to Nicaragua providing eye care to patients with limited access to care. She also did a rotation at the Northport VA hospital where she examined veterans who have served our country.

Currently, Dr. Schmidt is an active member of the New York State Optometric Association where she is part of a Young Advocate Committee - helping to get more young optometrists involved in organized optometry. Dr. Schmidt is a native Long Islander and is an avid beachgoer, outdoor enthusiast, globe trotter and animal lover.
